Professionalism Counts!
I feel compelled, based on some of the resumes I have seen recently, to point out a few things that I thought were common sense when it comes to job searching. You may especially find these points helpful if you aren't getting called for interviews. If I missed any, feel free to add them in the comments section. Thanks!
- Check what email address you are using. It puts me off when someone uses their work email address to search for a new job. Your personal email address, though, shouldn't be too "cute", nor should it sound like a, um, porn star advertisement. hotguyforyou@ is not the email address to use on your resume or monster.com profile.
- On a related note, if I am calling to set up an interview time for a mid level Software Engineer position, and it sounds like I have called a frat house, I am not likely to leave a message. If I do leave a message, I am always curious to see if I will get a call back from a grown up.
- Use your cell phone number as your main contact number if your roommates aren't good at leaving you messages.
- Don't write to me in IM language. Even in email correspondence, take the time to actually spell out the words you are trying to convey. This tells me you aren't lazy and that you will communicate professionally with our clients. If I have to call my niece to figure out what you are saying, its not a good sign! (Yep, I'm getting old!)
Those are just a few that come to mind, based on some recent recruiting experiences. It may be the tech industry, but we are still running a business...
