Transitioning to a Technology Career

Wednesday August 13, 2008

I have received several emails lately from readers that are interested in learning how they can transition their current career to a full time career in technology - either as Electrical Engineers, Web Designers, or other specialties within Information Technology.

Some items to consider when transitioning careers:

  • Obtaining your education online is likely more convenient than attending classes in a traditional classroom. Here are some great, accredited online degree programs to start with.
  • The best way to get experience while still working your "normal" job (gotta pay those bills!!) is to volunteer. Check with schools, non-profits, small medical offices, churches, daycares and any other local organization you can think of. Your gym, YMCA, youth group - anywhere! The goal is not to make money from it (although that would be a nice bonus) but to get some experience for your resume and make some contacts.
  • Depending on your chosen field, you can list your services on various freelance contracting sites, such as eLance or guru.com to earn a bit of cash and experience. You can also list yourself with as many temporary agencies as you can handle, just let them know you want part time, evenings, weekends - whatever hours you think you can work.
  • Finally, check all the job boards for openings, and list your resume for contact. Do searches on a regular basis. It doesn't hurt to contact an employer than is searching for a full time, experienced employee and asking if they would consider either a part time fill-in or a full time, less experienced candidate. Being proactive can really pay off!
  • Don't forget the job fairs - my very favorite way to get free, real-time feedback on your resume, your skills and where you can improve. You also get to practice interviewing and get a feel for who is hiring what skills. Priceless!

More than ever, a prospective employer needs to be impressed by your presentation. Check out the entry level career resources to ensure you have your cover letter, resume and interviewing skills at their very best.
