Job and Career Sites in the News

Dateline: 1/26/98

This is the first feature in a series of its kind here at Job Searching - Technical. When a few, noteworthy news stories or press releases are published at around the same time, I'll offer you this recurring feature to help keep you up to date on the latest in employment. I hope you find it useful.

CareerMosaic
Last week, this comprehensive, matured career site announced that it formed five, new alliances with leading Web sites, bringing their total partnerships to thirty. CareerMosaic will provide career services for users of their new partner sites, which include:

CareerMosaic offers jobs from thousands of employers globally, plus employer profiles, online job fairs, résumé posting, resources for college students, and more. With over 300,000 job queries per day, it consistently ranks among the highest of the top sites at 100Hot, and is the winner of numerous awards. Bernard Hodes Advertising, Inc. launched CareerMosaic on July 4, 1994.

HeadHunter.Net
This highly successful employment site that came out of the blue of Cyberspace, announced a $2.1-million financing package from ITC Holding Company, an investment firm that funds telecommunications businesses.

The growth of HeadHunter.Net is impressive. Just over a year ago they didn't even exist, but now they consistently rank among the top sites at 100Hot. ITC's investment will provide the resources to ensure that HeadHunter.Net remains on top.

HeadHunter.Net does not charge job seekers, but that's nothing new; few sites do. But, it also doesn't charge employers to post jobs. That is newor at least rareand probably one of the reasons for its phenomenal growth. The advantage is lots of jobs: Over 12,000 employers are flocking to the site to post them. The disadvantage is cookies: It sends too many, probably to please the advertisers who foot the bills.

The content providers boast that the site has close to 100,000 fresh, original jobs, 15,000 new résumés, and "10000s" of job and résumé hits daily. They hype it a bit too much, especially with vague and meaningless statistics; for example, the dollar figures under Volume, which represent the combined salaries of all the jobs listed. The dollar figures are huge and impressive, which is probably why they post them, but what's the significance? Makes me think mail-order con artists have discovered New Media!

HeadHunter.Net doesn't offer niceties such as career advice and a job search agent. (See my Jobs by Email category for free search agents at other sites.) But, there's no denying its marketing success, and it does list a lot of jobs, on which you may conveniently perform detailed searches by keyword, category, salary, location, and education. You may also post your résumé after you register. They keep their database fresh by removing jobs over 45 days old and résumés over 90 days old.

Hot Jobs
Also listed among the top job sites at 100Hot, this member-based recruiting site announced The Hot Spot last week.

The Hot Spot lets you create a personal, password-protected home page to manage your job search. For free, you may:

  • Retrieve statistics on how many times your résumé has been searched by employers
  • Invoke Hot Lock to keep your employer from seeing your résumé
  • Set up a personal search agent to automatically notify you of jobs matching your criteria

Hot Jobs allows member companies to add, edit and delete jobs instantly online. Search these fresh jobs by keywords, job type, company, and location. Visit the Hot Shots Résumé Workshop for tips on creating your résumé and cover letter, and to submit your résumé using Reslex, software that automatically extracts, formats, and lets you edit important information from your ASCII résumé.
