Industries among those that suffered moderate to significant job losses in February are listed below.
- Manufacturing (electrical equipment, industrial machinery, aircraft, printing and publishing)
- Mining (oil and gas extraction)
- Wholesale trade
- Insurance
- Finance (security and commodity brokerages)
- Transportation (airlines and trucking)
Manufacturing accounted for a big chunk of unemployment claims, by cutting 50,000 jobs. Relatively speaking, that might sound a little better when compared with an average loss of about 111,000 in the preceding 12 months. But the return to work from temporary plant shutdowns in motor vehicle manufacturing mentioned previously, offset total manufacturing employment losses by 26,000.
