February is Black History Month, and includes Black Family Technology Awareness Week. In recognition of these important, cultural events, Part 2 of this feature includes links to details of diversity career events for this month. But first, some background...
What is Black History Month?
Every February, we honor the achievements of our African-American culture with
articles, documentaries, movies, special events, and more specifically in this
case, diversity career events. Black
History Month began in 1926, when Carter
G. Woodson—an accomplished African
American—created and promoted Negro
History Week, now more commonly called Black History Week. In 1976 it evolved
into this month-long celebration, also called African American Heritage Month.
What is Black Family Technology Awareness Week?
It's an initiative to encourage organizations throughout the US, to
host activities that promote the importance of technology, engineering, science
and math to the Black community. For information on how you can participate
February 7-13, see the special
at CCG Online.
What are "diversity" career events?
They are scheduled job, educational and networking opportunities for
American ethnic groups, including African, Asian, Hispanic and Native Americans.
Some also cater to women, veterans, people with disabilities, and groups who are
underrepresented in the workplace. Although they cater to certain groups,
diversity events are typically open to all job seekers. Events include job
fairs, career workshops, learning seminars, and even group activities that
combine fun with career networking.
Comments, suggestions or questions? Found a great career resource and want to share it? Send feedback. Want to network, and discuss technical job searching, employment, and careers with others? Go to the chat room or bulletin board, both open 24 hours daily.
