About Online Job Searching

The Internet has revolutionized the way you search for jobs and the way employers seek employees. According to the 1999 Electronic Recruiting Index Executive Summary by Internet Business Network, employers and recruiters posted almost 29-million job openings on the Net in 1998. That's no drop in the bucket!

The Net has made job searching easier than ever, but it doesn't stop there. With just a few mouse clicks, you'll find

And everything else associated with landing a job. But it's not magic. Although the Net lays it all out in front of you better than ever before, it doesn't land the job. It takes due diligence and hard work, as does any other method.

Preparing Your Resume

The Net has also changed the way you send your resume to recruiters and employers. Because you send or paste it electronically, you'll need to "rewire" your resume for the Internet. There are some other special considerations for sending your resume via the Net, too. For resume resources from Job Searching: Technical and the Web, including resume writing software that helps you compose electronic resumes and cover letters, see the Topic Guide.

Writing Letters

As with any job-searching method, you'll probably need to write or request a few employment-related business letters besides cover letters, such as

  • Resignation letters
  • Thank-you letters
  • Job inquiry letters
  • Reference letters
  • Salary requirement letters
  • Salary histories

If you've never written or requested these letters, they might be a mystery. Even if you have, you might want some refreshers. Not to worry. The Letter Writing Desk includes essential resources and many samples for writing such letters, all neatly organized in one place. It even includes samples you may download (or copy and paste) for personal use.
