Find Jobs at Company Web Sites
Employment-related sites provide useful services for both employers and job seekers. But as of this date, employers are just beginning to recognize their significance for finding job seekers. It was only just a few months ago that Silicon Valley executives got together to discuss and recognize the significance of the Web as an employment medium. Employment sites are gaining ground rapidly, but you might want to try alternate Web methods to maximize your success. This is not to say that you should disregard employment sites; just try other methods, too.
One of the best ways to land jobs—especially those that aren't advertised—is by contacting employers directly, but not by blindly spamming them with your résumé. Employers are barraged by unsolicited résumés daily, and many are filed and forgotten. It's better to know something about a company first, include this wisdom in a tailored cover letter, and send it along with your tailored résumé for specific job openings.
With companies jumping on the Web bandwagon, most have sites that tell you just about everything you need to know about them, including job opportunities that they may not advertise elsewhere. To find them, visit sites that point to employers' Web sites and job pages, like those below. You'll find similar sites in Research Companies.
BigBook
Once you've landed an interview, make sure you're on time. Provides driving
directions and even displays an interactive map! Lists 16 million, US
businesses. Web sites, too.
BizWeb
What they lack in design, they make up for in their hierarchical listing of
companies by industry.
CareerCast
Has a unique approach. Jobs that member employers post to their Web sites are
automatically replicated at this site. You may search them by keyword and
location (city, state or area code).
CareerMagazine
Companies place their own listings here. Click on one to read a brief profile,
then click on the link to their job listings.
CompaniesOnline
Search for companies by industry, city, state, or even ticker symbol. If you
select your state alone, it'll list all companies in its database for your
state, along with the cities in which they're located.
CorpTech
Research a database of over 45,000 high-tech companies in all kinds of ways.
Free membership required for some services.
Hoover's
Online
Connect to the thousands of employers' profiles and Web sites if available. A
subscription is required for access to custom search features and in-depth
profiles, but brief company capsules are free.
JobTrak
The Online Career Fair links you directly to
company Web sites and job opportunities. JobTrak caters to college students and
recent grads, but the company info is useful for all.
Monster Board
Browse employer profiles and jobs, by region or alphabetically. Apparently, they
intend to add other countries, but the US and Canada are the only ones available
now.
Recruiting-Links.Com
Has a unique search engine that doesn't display just job lists, but rather
direct links to employers' Web sites that have jobs meeting your requirements.
Definitely two thumbs up!
Westech Virtual Job Fair
Browse US employers' profiles, jobs and Web sites at this online version of the
popular, high-tech career fair.
Yahoo!:
Business and Economy: Companies
This good ol' standby lists thousands of companies by industry. It's a bit of a
bother to get through the multi-layered hierarchy, but it's definitely
comprehensive. Be sure to scroll down the page for company listings as you click
through the hierarchy.
