Hot
IT Skills
Part 3
You may not need a computer science degree to land a good job.
With the high demand, a few, well-targeted, IT certification
courses is all it takes to get the ball rolling. For some jobs, you only need to
be good at one skill, such as Microsoft Windows NT.
Speaking of which, Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCP) are hot right now and command comparatively higher salaries. But, some say that a few employers are beginning to shy away from MCPs because they command higher salaries, so the signals are mixed. To stay on top of matters, visit the resources in Tech Watch. For details about MCP training paths, browse Microsoft Training & Services.
Add Novell Certification to your Microsoft Certification, and you've got a winning combination of skills for jobs in many, management information systems (MIS) departments.
Consider online training.
It's hard to hold down a job and take courses, not to mention spend
time with family, have a social life, maintain a home, wash the car and feed the
dog, all at the same time. If you can't figure out how in the world you can
squeeze in classes, take a look at online training. It's rapidly gaining
popularity, and you can take courses pretty much at your leisure. If you're
reading this, you're probably already equipped to get started. Computer courses
in particular lend themselves well to online training.
While attending a prestigious institution may be impressive, it doesn't much matter where you take, say, Novell courses. It's possessing and maintaining the certifications that count most. Novell is a leader in IT training and certification. Institutions, online or otherwise, must have Novell's authorization to administer the official courses, which makes passing them at least respectable, if not prestigious.
Besides, even prestigious institutions are now offering online training (also called distance learning) or are planning to, as are many colleges, universities and vocational training centers. Courses are typically cheaper online, and with today's technology, they are much more sophisticated than the computer-based training (CBT) courses of the early 90s.
For starters, see Training Online or check with your local, IT educational institutions. To find colleges, universities, financial aid and scholarships, browse the sites in College Connection.
