Diversity Career Resources

In celebration of Black History Month and Chinese New Year, this week I spotlight sites that provide career resources for our American ethnic groups, includingbut not limited toAfrican, Asian, Hispanic and Native Americans. But first, brief histories on the events.

Black History Month
Each year in February, we celebrate the achievements of our African American culture with articles, features, movies, events, and in this case, diversity career resources. It began in 1926, when Carter G. Woodson, an accomplished African American, created Negro History Week. In 1976, Negro History Week evolved into this month-long celebration, also known as African American Heritage Month.

Chinese New Year
For Chinese traditionalists, the beginning of the new year is based on the Chinese lunar calendar. Also known as the Spring Festival,  it begins on a different day each year, on the first day of the first lunar month, which occurs sometime between January 1 and February 19. The years are named for the animal signs of the Chinese zodiac and cycle every 12 years, beginning with The Year of the Rat. The Year of the Tiger began last month on the 28th, in the Chinese year 4696. The celebration is a huge event in many Chinese communities in the US, such as in Honolulu, Houston, New York and San Francisco. Of course, it's huge in the Chinese native lands, too.
