What's New in Job Searching on the Net

Dateline: 2/23/98

When a few, noteworthy news stories or press releases are published at around the same time, I offer this recurring feature to help keep you up to date on the latest in job searching and employment trends. I hope you find it useful.

CareerMosaic
Once again, this matured, ever-progressive career site is in the news. Earlier this month, they announced their plans to hold a series of online job fairs for major US and international job markets, in partnership with Yahoo! The online fairs consist of links to the job opportunities of selected employers. They include sweepstakes too, where you are solicited for marketing information in exchange. But, you're not required to answer the questions to be eligible for the sweepstakes or featured jobs.

The fairs occur weekly and biweekly through October 31, 1998, alternating among the job markets listed below. I've linked the markets to deliver you to Yahoo's respective Metro and World pages, where the fairs are announced as they occur. But, they are also announced on CareerMosaic's US and international sites. The Dallas/Fort Worth fair is taking place at this writing, and the Atlanta fair was first up earlier this month.

Yahoo! Metros
Atlanta Miami
Austin Minneapolis/St. Paul
Boston New York
Chicago San Francisco Bay Area
Dallas/Fort Worth Seattle
Los Angeles Washington DC

World Yahoos
Asia Ireland
Australia Japan
Canada United Kingdom
France

CareerMosaic also offers jobs from thousands of employers globally, plus employer profiles, résumé posting, resources for college students, and more. With over 300,000 job queries per day, it consistently ranks among the highest of the top sites at 100Hot, and is the winner of numerous awards.

CareerPath.Com
Even with the increasing popularity of job sites on the Net, pulp employment sections haven't yet died. This is evidenced in part by the success of CareerPath, which compiles job ads from US newspapers. Earlier this month, they added the 11 newspapers below to their ranks of over 50. The links deliver you to the employment or classified sections of 9 of the 11 newspapers. Apparently, the El Paso Times does not have a Web site. The Rockford Register Star is no longer available at Sinnfree, because it's building a Web site of its own. To access the job listings of these and other newspapers, visit the Jobs by Newspaper page at CareerPath.

Although not yet officially launched (but working), CareerPathEXTRA is also new. On this page, you can search by employer, location, category, industry and keyword for job ads compiled from employers' Web sites. In most cases, you have the option to link to the original ads. But, since it's new, only a few employers are listed. You or your browser must accept cookies to use CareerPathEXTRA, but CareerPath says that they won't permanently store them on your disk.

CareerPath also offers free résumé posting, employer research, career advice, and some extras at In the Works.

Jobfind.Com
Earlier this month, this job site with ties to the Boston Herald announced its new service, Resume Central. This free service offers several options for submitting your résumé, and even allows you to send it directly to employers through their job ads.

Jobfind is a comprehensive site, with job searching, corporate profiles, career news, and more. Job categories range from business to technical. Job locations are confined to New England states, with the exception of a generic selection for locations "Outside New England." Their job searching engine is easy to use, but a bit buggy. For example, I requested only five ads (the default) for my search on Applications Developer, but 42 showed up. A few times, using the back button on my browser didn't take me back a page, but rather to a page which explained that my session had timed out. Flaws aside, they add a nice touch at the bottom of most job ads: A button to display the corporate profile of the advertising company. In turn, the profile has a link to display all of the company's jobs.

WomenConnect.Com
This comprehensive, one-stop Web community for female professionals and business owners launched its new Career Center. The center is supported technically by CareerBuilder and is comprehensive in itself, offering job searching, articles, news, bulletin boards, chats, and much more.

While it is an excellent site, it sends way too many cookies for my taste. Cookie Pal (well worth the $15 registration fee) automatically rejected 85 while I was bouncing back and forth researching this site and writing about it. Sheez!

Irritating number of cookies aside, they update their jobs daily, and their search form offers job searching by location, description, keyword, and salary. Conveniently, they stick an asterisk (*) next to the locations that have current openings, so you don't waste your time. Even more convenient is their Personal Search Agent, where you may register to receive job notification automatically by email. For more of these convenient search agents, see my Jobs by Email category.

Comments, suggestions or questions? Found a great career resource and want to share it? Send feedback. Want to network and discuss technical job searching, employment, and careers with others? Go to the chat room or bulletin board, both open 24 hours daily.
