Jobs at Start-Up Companies

Where can I find start-up companies?

Search the Web for venture capital firms, investment banks and large corporations that invest in start-up companies. Some, such as Associated Venture Investors and VMSGroup, list or link to companies in which they have a stake.

Some search words to use are:

  • Start-up companies, start up companies, and startup companies
    • At some search engines, a hyphen (-) means to exclude a word.
    • In this case, skip the word start-up or search on the phrase "start-up companies".
  • Venture capital
  • Business ventures
  • Emerging growth companies and emerging technology companies
  • Initial public offerings and IPO

Initial public offerings indicate that the companies may be relatively young start-ups or spin-offs. IPO specialty sites are popping up left and right from IPO mania and the rapid growth of online investing. Much of the mania is over Internet and related tech stocks, but many sites list all IPOs. Some, such as EDGAR Online, even provide company profiles and replicate the information filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), so you can research how well a company is doing before you apply for work.

The Startup Zone specializes in listing start-up companies by industry and state. (You can try it for free, but it ultimately requires a subscription fee.) See Research Companies for more sites that allow you to search for companies in all kinds of ways. The next section includes links to free sites that list or specialize in start-up company jobs.
