Job Fairs
Virtual Job Fairs
What many sites call "virtual" or "online" job fairs are not
much more than the job listingsand sometimes corporate profiles and Web site
linksof a few, featured employers. Nevertheless, they are good resources for
current jobs and easy to browse. Some virtual job fairs take it a step farther
by scheduling live chats with employers. If you want to give them a try, see Virtual
Job Fairs.
Live Job Fairs
Live job fairs are excellent places to network, distribute your
resume and land a job quickly. But it's a good idea to prepare.
- Dress up
- Take at least 25 scannable resumes
- Be ready to interview on the spot
Job fairs might have hundreds of participating employers. Some job fair promoters have Web sites where you may search for jobs in advance of the event, so that you may target specific employers to make the most of your time on the floor. At some promoters' Web sites, you may also submit your resume in advance. Some of those will even accept your resume for a couple of weeks or so after the fair, in case you missed opportunities on the floor or couldn't attend. Take full advantage of these features if available.
There are dozens of U.S. and international job fairs each month, especially from fall through spring. For links to the schedules and details, check the Job Fair category, which also includes on-campus career events at colleges and universities. Also check your local pulp or online newspaper. Promoters and employers usually advertise details about one to two weeks in advance.
