Professional Organizations
Networking is still touted as one of the best ways to land jobs. Professional organizations are made up of employers, vendors and individuals who have similar interests, so they are excellent places to network. In fact, networking is pretty much what they're all about. Some offer other membership benefits too, such as insurance and product discounts, job listings from hiring members, private job fairs, and more.
Professional organizations also have a worldwide presence on the Web. To access all of their services and receive full benefits, you might have to pay small membership dues. However, almost all provide some free services and it doesn't cost you anything to investigate their benefits online.
There are thousands of professional organizations. To find them on the Web, start by checking the Organizations category. If you don't find a professional organization of interest listed there, also check the Virtual Community of Associations and try searching for professional organizations or trade associations at search engines, such as Yahoo. For example, if you're interested in computer professional organizations, search on such, plus variations like computer trade associations and information technology organizations.
