Newsgroups

Job seekers often overlook these valuable resources. Also called Internet discussion groups, Usenet forums, Usenet newsgroups, and just plain ol' Usenet, newsgroups are all over the Internet and have been around for years. They are message-based "communities" of people who have common interests.

Several newsgroups are dedicated to jobs and resumes, and networking is what they're all about. Recruiters and employers often visit newsgroups to look for resumes and post job ads. Many are city or job specific, which helps you to better target your job search.

You must set up your browser or email application to access newsgroups. There are also some drawbacks to posting in them, such as privacy if you're not careful about revealing your personal information. For more about that and precautionary measures to take, plus tips for using newsgroups in your job search, see the article "Job Newsgroups". For direct links to job and resume newsgroups, and sites that help you learn how to use them, see the category Job Newsgroups. Also refer to the help section of your browser or email application.
