Job Searching by Keyword
Advanced Boolean Query
If our tech support specialist is looking for jobs in Austin or Dallas, it'll
take another search with Dallas in place of Austin using
simple Boolean query. To help you better focus a single search, some sites allow
advanced Boolean query. You may type the operator not, enclose phrases
in double quotes, and group keywords and operators in parenthesis.
- Not means to ignore job ads that include the associated keywords you type. Your search does not return job ads that have the keywords anywhere within the text.
- Enclosing keywords within " " means to search for the phrase you type. Your search returns job ads that have the keywords within the text, but only if they appear side-by-side in the order in which you type them.
- Enclosing keywords within ( ) allows you to combine operators, to narrow or widen your search. Your search returns only the job ads that meet the conditions you specify.
In this case, our specialist may widen a single search to include tech support jobs in either Austin or Dallas, and at the same time, narrow it to exclude all tech support jobs in a specific industry:
|
"technical support" and (Austin or Dallas) not semiconductor |
This expression means something like:
|
Search for job ads that include the words technical and support side-by-side, plus either of the words Austin or Dallas appearing anywhere in the text, but exclude ads with the word semiconductor. |
In plain English, it means:
|
Search for technical support positions only in Austin or Dallas, but exclude semiconductor companies. |
