Besides job and career sites, the Information Superhighway has paved many routes to jobs.

Local Newspapers
For years they've been an excellent source for jobs, and the only one that many job seekers have used. Employers may not be advertising in pulp newspapers as much, because it's typically cheaper to advertise at online career sites and job banks. But now, newspapers are competing with a fresh, worldwide presence on the Internet. Employment sections haven't died, as evidenced by the success of CareerPath.Com, which compiles thousands of job ads from US newspapers.

If you want the whole story about it plus the links, see my archived feature "Search Jobs Online in Your Local Newspaper." Otherwise, to see if your favorite newspapers are on-line, click on the same links below. Also check regional and national newspapers for jobs too, such as USA Today.

Job Fairs
What many sites call virtual or online job fairs are simply the job listings—and sometimes corporate profiles and Web site links—of featured employers. Nevertheless, they are good sources for current jobs and very easy to browse. Typically, they are limited to just a few employers, but one of the most comprehensive is at CareerCity, which includes job descriptions and detailed company profiles by city. If you want to give others a try, see the Virtual Job Fairs category.

Live job fairs are excellent places to network, distribute your résumé and land jobs, but you must be prepared: Dress up, take at least 25 polished, scannable résumés with you, and be ready to interview on the spot. For more information about how to make the most of job fairs, see "Strategies for Job Fairs." Then, scan Job Fairs, where you'll find links to dozens of career events occurring each month. Many job fair sponsors allow you to browse opportunities and submit your résumé in advance at their sites, so you may want to look for those options, especially if you can't attend in person. Also check your local, online or pulp newspaper for upcoming job fairs. Sponsors and employers usually advertise details about one to two weeks in advance.

Employers' Web Sites
Just about every company has a Web site these days, where many list their current jobs. Browse the employment pages, especially for jobs not advertised in other media (the proverbial "Hidden Job Market"). Naturally, I can't link you to every company here. Instead, I've deep-linked you into sites where you'll find links (or search fields) to companies and their job listings. For more links, see "Straight to the Source."

Employer Profiles
Companies place their own listings here. Click on one to read a brief profile, then click on the link to their job listings.

Job Search Companies
Browse US and international employers' job pages by region or letters of the alphabet, at The Monster Board.

Meta List of High-Technology Companies' Home Pages

Recruiting-Links.Com
Has a unique search engine that doesn't display just jobs, but rather direct links to employers' Web sites that have jobs meeting your requirements. Two thumbs up!

Professional Organizations
Professional organizations are excellent vehicles for networking, and networking is still touted as one of the best ways to land jobs. Professional organizations are made up of employers, vendors and individuals who have similar interests. Now, they too have a worldwide presence on the Internet. To access all of their services and receive full benefits, you may have to pay membership fees and dues. However, all provide some free services and it doesn't cost you anything to investigate their benefits online, so browse them to see what they offer. There are hundreds. If you don't find one that interests you in my Online Organizations category, check my Cultural Diversity category, as some of the sites there cross the boundaries of both categories. Also check the mega sites for links to professional organizations, and the Virtual Community of Associations. Try searching for professional organizations or trade associations at search engines, such as Yahoo!.

Newsgroups
Also called Internet discussion groups, Usenet forums, Usenet newsgroups, and just plain ol' Usenet, they are all over the Internet. They are message-based communities of people interested in particular topics. Several are dedicated to jobs, where networking is what it's all about. Recruiters and employers often visit newsgroups to look for résumés and post job ads.

For detailed information about using newsgroups in your job hunt, see my feature "Job Newsgroups." For direct links to job newsgroups and "help" sites, see the category by the same name.

Job Agents
This is a generic term for intelligent agents at career sites. Intelligent agents are relative newcomers to the Net, but they're popping up all over the place. They are made up of software code that automatically scans and returns information from Cyberland, based on search criteria we mere mortals provide. All you do is fill out an online form at a career site that provides it. Then, the agent searches around the clock for jobs that meet your qualifications and desires, even when you're offline. When it has results, it sends you a list by email or to your personal mailbox at the site. What could be easier?

If you want a little more information about intelligent agents, plus links to sites with job agents, see my feature "Jobs by Email." To go straight to the same links plus more, see my Jobs by Email category, where I list sites with job agents, and those that simply notify you of new job listings by email.
