From Independent Contractor Sue Thomas

"Success in technology consulting rests primarily on knowing the application, or niche, for which your clients use the hardware and software. Anybody can learn the latest and greatest in technology, but expertise in how your clients apply the technology is the key to building your business. Speaking their language and understanding their concerns is what ultimately lands jobs and earns referrals."

Good advice from Sue. She left her systems analyst job at Wyse Technology in 1997, to become a full-time consultant in California's high-tech Silicon Valley. She hasn't looked back. Her independence and increased earnings have allowed her to buy a new home in a more peaceful community outside of hectic Silicon Valley, while her niche expertise and networking savvy have rapidly expanded her client base across several states.

Sue adds, "One very good way to enhance your expertise and expand your client base at the same time, is to attend the same professional development classes that your prospects are attending. You can network while you learn."
