Industries among those suffering moderate to significant job losses in August are listed below.

Manufacturing has suffered more than any industry in this sluggish economy, and employment declined by yet another 68,000 jobs in August. Losses in the previous four months averaged 18,000. In the 12 months preceding March, they averaged a whopping 111,000. In August, the most substantial declines were in

  • Electronic and electrical equipment
  • Industrial machinery and equipment
  • Fabricated metals
  • Rubber and plastics

Retail lost 55,000 jobs in August, after remaining fairly stable on average since February. A decrease in department store employment accounted for most of the decline.

All figures are subject to revision by the BLS, as more information becomes available in the weeks following the initial report.
