When a few, noteworthy news stories are published at around the same time, or when career sites are launched or improved, I offer this recurring feature to help keep you up to date on the latest in job searching and employment trends. I hope you find it useful.

CasinoCareers Online is the first of its kind on the Net, thanks to Bothaina "Beth" Deighan, President. Beth was a victim of downsizing at Bally's Grand in Atlantic City. Instead of dwelling and stagnating, this accomplished, dynamic lady transformed her own misfortune into opportunities for her colleagues.

Since its launch about three months ago, CasinoCareers has received over 1,100 résumés, and currently receives 100-200 per week. It represents casinos throughout the US with several more in the works, including Native-American owned. Beth will be in Las Vegas 9/23-25, promoting her creation and securing more casino job opportunities for you at the World Gaming Congress and Expo. She'll be hosting booth 384, so stop in to say hello if you're in town. Tell her I sent you. ;-)

Opportunities range from the evident casino positions, to the not-so-evident technical positions, such as maintaining slot machines, surveillance equipment, and backroom computers. Currently, there are over 100 job titles in 26 departments. To be eligible, you must qualify then post your résumé publicly or confidentially. Employers will contact you directly when they have openings that match your qualifications. After posting your résumé, check the evolving Career Advancement Tips section to prepare for your interviews.

Public Service Employees Network is a guide to jobs, resources and services for government workers, launched earlier this year. Some resources and services cost, while others—like locating government employers—are free. Conveniently, every section has a drop-down box for you to search, then browse and link to government organizations and their jobs by location. PSE-Net lets you know some particulars about the organizations, too; for example, if they provide downloadable or online job applications.

To land a public service job, you may have to pass a Civil Service Exam. PSE-Net provides you with a Civil Service Test Guide, where you may link to books, sample questions, and other resources to help you pass. They also issue a free, Public Service Employees Bulletin, featuring everything from employee rights to deferred compensation plans.

GCOS Cobol is a highly-targeted résumé bank, launched about two months ago. Except for a fairly cool, liquid-motion splash screen, this is a no-frills site offering free résumé posting exclusively to GCOS/Honeywell-Bull/Cobol programmers. (Say that three times fast!) After completing the On-Line Resume Builder, you may display and print your formatted résumé.

It's difficult to compete with the big, investor-backed career sites. I like to see the smaller sites with regular people behind them do well, too. If you're a programmer in this niche, why not post your résumé to help this new site out, while helping yourself? Like Webmaster Walt writes, "It's Free! So what do you have to lose?"
