About Webmaster Jobs
Part 2
Education
Educational institutions don't yet offer any Webmaster degrees per se, like BCS
or bachelor of CyberSpace. Many Webmasters are self-taught, and they have
various degrees and backgrounds, such as marketing, computer science, graphics
and technical communications, to name only a few.
On the other hand, educational institutions are getting around to creating Internet-specific curriculums. For example, San Jose State University has added the Internet Education Institute to its certificate programs, and the University of California, Santa Cruz offers Internet and World Wide Web courses. One would expect these two to be among the first to have such programs being near Silicon Valley and all, where the bulk of CyberJunkies live and work.
My extensive Net search didn't reveal tons of other educational institutions offering similar programs, but a few popped up. I list them below. I suspect many others will soon follow suit, if they haven't already. Just because the programs aren't listed in search engines doesn't mean they don't exist, even though the Net is the perfect place to promote such. If you're interested, check
- With your local educational institutions. To find them online, try Infoseek, Lycos and Yahoo!.
- My ever-growing, Online Training category to take Webmaster courses from the comfort of your home
- Microsoft Training and Certification, which offers lots of advice about starting an information technology career and boosting your current IT skills, including those required for Webmaster jobs.
- Casio's Internet University, a directory of accredited providers offering online courses, including computers and the Internet. At this writing, I didn't see any Webmaster programs per se, but lots of related courses.
Despite the confusion, some of the institutions below are bold enough to actually offer Webmaster certificates. Perhaps they'll set the standards. If you don't have time to go for full certification, browse Webmaster job ads to see which skills are hot. You'll see a trend. In Part 4, I link you to job sites that specialize in Internet-related jobs.
