About Webmaster Jobs
Part 3
Salaries
Right now it's no secret that there's a shortage of
information technology (IT) workers, including Webmasters. Employers are paying
through the nose, but, because there are so many titles, skill sets and job
descriptions for Webmaster, it's difficult to find a salary survey that nails it
on the head. However, I did find one, plus two in the ballpark, after I
initially wrote this feature.
- Based on their 1998 Internet salary survey, ZDNet reports that Webmasters make an average of $40,000 to $53,000, depending on education and location. There are lots of other stats and Internet job titles here too, updated quarterly.
- According to the July, 1998 Real Salary Survey, the range for Web development jobs in the US was $40,000 to $93,500, with a median of $54,250.
- Here in High-Tech Heaven it's a little better, but the cost of living is way higher than just about everywhere. According to writer Lisa Stapleton who cites the 1998 AEA Internet and Web Jobs Compensation Survey, median salaries are from $38,000 to $118,000. (Scroll up the page one click for median salaries of the top-five Internet jobs).
By the way, near the top of the article, Lisa also writes that the Webmaster title is dead. Tell that to those who report themselves as Webmasters in ZDNet's salary survey! It's not dead; just obscure.
| If you didn't already see it in Part 2, you'll find another interpretation of the AEA compensation survey at San Jose State University's Internet Education Institute. Scroll down the page. |
