Make the Most of Your Paycheck

To wrap up this salary series, here are some nifty, online and software tools to help you make the most of your hard-earned paycheck.

  • Thinking about looking for a job in another city? This popular Salary Calculator helps you determine your equivalent salary requirement for worldwide locations. HomeFair.Com has other relocation and salary-related tools too, such as a Moving Calculator, Insurance Professor, The Mortgage Qualifier and The Relocation Crime Lab.
  • The Tools at Money.com have lots to do with making the most of your paycheck. For example, if want to know which cities are the best, crummiest, cheapest, or most expensive places to live and work, try The Best Places to Live in America. Planning for retirement? See the Retirement Calculator. Salary never seems to stretch far enough? Analyze your debt with How Deep Is Your Debt? There are lots more, too.
  • Are you paid what you're worth? If you're an IT professional, see how your current salary measures up, at the Interactive Salary Survey. Training professionals, see the Salary Calculator.
  • With tax time just around the corner, you might be wondering if you owe even more of your salary, or if you get some back. Find out with the Tax Estimator. Quicken.Com has many more tools and aids for making the most of your money.
  • PayCheck helps you make financial decisions by allowing you to analyze withholdings, and compute and print W-4 forms. It's shareware for Windows 95, free to try, $15 if you keep it. It's good thing it's free to try, as it's not too friendly for beginners, and neither are the help files. Download it from File Mine or ZDNet. Make sure you turn down your speakers before you click on the menu for the first time, so the sound effects don't make you think you're getting electrocuted! ZDNet calls it "colorful," but not expecting it, you might jump out of your chair.
  • FeeRate for Windows 95/NT is designed to help you determine fees if you're a consultant, regardless of your type of business. It's a 30-day evaluation version and costs $15 if you keep it.
