Before You Buy Resume Writing Software

Resume writing software packages have some handy features for reasonable prices. But some include extra bells, buzzers and whistles that you may not want, given the choice. Some makers offer scaled-down, less-expensive versions. But others just bundle everything together for one price, giving you little choice. To evaluate features, download a free trial, evaluation or demo copy if the maker offers it, then shop for the best price. In the meantime, below are more tips for evaluating resume writing software packages.

System Requirements
As with all applications, ensure that resume writing software is compatible with your computer's microprocessor, operating system, memory and printer, and will install and run within your free disk space. Resume writing software makers typically list some or all of these system requirements on their packaging and Web sites. Most online retailers list or link to them, too.

Technical Support
Is it free or extra? Is it available at the maker's Web site 24/7 or only by phone Monday through Friday? Can you access it with just a click from within the resume writing software? Is it comprehensive and easy to use? Look for an extensive list of answers to frequently-asked questions (FAQs), searchable solutions or a knowledge database, bug fixes (patches) and updates, thorough documentation, and additional email and phone support.

Employment-Related Letters
Is there a feature to help you to compose tailored cover letters to accompany your resumes? If you're not a letter writer, also look for features that help you with other employment-related letters, such as interview follow-up, thank-you, job inquiry and resignation letters.

Resume Broadcasting
It's nifty to "broadcast" your resume to many recipients at once with just a click, and some resume writing software packages offer this feature. But take the hype about it with a grain of salt. It's better to tailor your resume for each job description, and you certainly don’t want it to end up on your boss's desk! Investigate whether or not you can select who receives your resume, and better yet, which resume too. Also look for a free update feature that freshens the broadcast list.

Job Searching
It's also convenient to automatically search several job banks simultaneously. Again, some offer this feature. But the makers can't cut deals with all job banks, and it's unlikely that they've included your local job banks and online newspapers, the best places to start. Be aware that you'll still need to job search on the Web "manually" to increase your odds. Also check for a free update feature that keeps the job-bank search list fresh.

Cost
While most are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to resume writing services, natch, cost is a consideration too. Depending on the brand, features and store, resume writing software ranges from only about $15 to $38. (Writing services cost up to $200 or more, and you still must take the time to at least list your education, skills, employers and work duties.)
