Salesforce.com - Company Profile

Salesforce.com was founded in 1999 as a company that focuses on software as a service, or SaaS. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, and has offices in other parts of North America, and in Europe and Asia.

With cloud computing as its main focus, Salesforce.com offers a variety of customer relationship management or CRM software that is accessible online and available to customers on-demand via a subscription model.

The company has tailored its CRM application for different departments of an organization, sizes of businesses, and industries. Specializations include:

  • sales;
  • customer service;
  • small business;
  • communications;
  • financial services;
  • healthcare and life sciences;
  • high tech;
  • public sector; and
  • retail.

Salesforce.com CRM also comes in a variety of editions, each tailored to meet different business needs, and each with their own pricing.

Other products include Force.com, the company's platform for building cloud applications, and Chatter, a collaboration application and a platform for building social cloud-computing software.

Market Position:

Salesforce.com is considered one of the market leaders in sales force automation solutions. The company has been named a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for sales force automation. Oracle's Siebel CRM and CRM On Demand applications are also listed at Leaders, and are therefore major competitors of Salesforce.com's products.

According to Gartner, the SaaS model has really taken off for sales force automation, as companies look for ways to start using these types of applications without having to fork out huge dollars upfront for on-premises software installations.

Salesforce.com's Sales Cloud solution has also received awards from research firm Independent IT Analyst for categories such as "Highest Customer Satisfaction," "Best User Interface," "Most on Time on Budget Implementations" and "Best Reports and Dashboards."
