You might have seen overseas job ads like this in the classified sections of magazines, newspapers, tabloids and such.

$$$ WORK ABROAD $$$
15,000+ overseas companies hiring now!
Salaries to $100,000 and more!
Paid housing, car, medical and relocation!
Call 976-555-0000 for details.

Beware of these ads. Scammers know very well that the possibility of landing overseas jobs sounds exotic to many people, especially when the job market is bad at home. They take full advantage of it, by trying to make us think we'll earn a special "in" if we pay a fee. If you follow up on the ads, the fraudulent companies behind them will likely bait you more. For example, they might also claim that they

  • Maintain close working relationships with hundreds to thousands of companies that have overseas jobs available
  • Discuss your resume one-on-one with several hiring companies
  • Match you with a certain number of prospective overseas jobs within a specified time limit
  • Guarantee you'll land an overseas job

Overseas jobs are among the classic scams, just as most work-at-home jobs are. In fact, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed and won lawsuits against companies that made claims similar to those above, because the claims were blatant lies or dishonest stretches at best. Worse, the fraudulent companies charged their customers up to $550 for doing next to nothing, but collecting the fees.

Even if you don't buy into their overseas job baloney after you call, you might get an unpleasant surprise a few weeks later, when huge pay-per-call charges mysteriously appear on your phone bill.
