From 1995-2005, average annual Silicon Valley pay (includes salaries, hourly wages, bonuses and stock options) rose about nine percent faster than the national average. Despite beginnings of the dot-com bust downturn in 2000, Silicon Valley pay increased by 9.2 percent, after adjusting for inflation. Nationally, the increase was only 2 percent adjusted.
As expected, Silicon Valley pay raises didn't fare as well following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. At $69,455, the 2005 average annual pay was up only about $3K from 2000. But, that's for jobs across all industries, not just high-tech, and average Silicon Valley pay was still much higher than the national average, as typical.
Silicon Valley pay raises in so-called high-tech "cluster industries" did better in 2005. For example, Software once again led the pack at an average salary of $141,792, up almost $17K from year 2000. Computers/Communications came in at $131,941, followed by Semiconductor/Equipment at $123,401. Both were up from 2000, by about $16.8K and $6.4K respectively.
