Industries among those suffering significant job losses in September are listed below.

Manufacturing has suffered more than any industry in this poor economy. Losses in recent months averaged 18,000, but accelerated again in August (68,000) and September (35,000). In the 12 months preceding March, they averaged a whopping 111,000. In September, the most substantial declines were in

  • Electronic equipment
  • Industrial machinery
  • Aircraft
  • Furniture and fixtures

Transportation employment fell by 26,000, with almost half of the loss in air transportation (12,000). After holding steady since the beginning of 2002, employment in the trucking industry has fallen by 22,000 since July, with the bulk (17,000) in September.

Communications employment continued to decline in September, by 7,000. This industry has lost 145,000 jobs since April, 2001.

Local government lost 22,000 jobs in education, for a net loss of 19,000 across the board.

All figures are subject to revision by the BLS, as more information becomes available in the weeks following the initial report.
