References - Example of a Character Reference

From , former About.com Guide

Following is an example of a character reference. While I have not seen requests for character references in quite awhile, I am including this sample as a guideline. This type of reference may come up in certain industries that require access to sensitive information, such as a Security Engineer or a Consultant dealing with taxpayer information.

This could be written on personal stationery, company letter head or addressed as follows:

Company Name
Company Address
City, State, Zip
Phone number

Name of Recipient
Title of Recipient
Recipient Company Name
Recipient Company Address
City, State, Zip

Date

To Whom It May Concern: (or contact name requesting reference)

I have had the pleasure of being both a co-worker and a friend to Jane Employee for over four years.

In and out of the office, Jane conducts herself with integrity. She can be counted on not just to work hard, but to represent the company in a positive light. I know of numerous occasions where clients have specifically mentioned what a joy it is to work with Jane. She is a talented Engineer with excellent communication skills and a strong moral compass.

For these reasons, I have no hesitation in recommending Jane to your company.

If you would any further details about Jane Employee, please do not hesitate to contact me at (555) 555-1111.

Sincerely,
